A Bent Section Throws the Door Off

A door section is a thin, stiff shell that has to stay flat across its width. A dent or crack lowers that stiffness, and the neighboring panels, hinges and rollers start taking the strain the damaged one cannot. On commercial doors the usual cause is a hit from a lift truck, cart or trailer.

Some damage can be pressed out or reinforced. Cracked skins, creased hinge areas and rusted bottoms usually mean the section should be replaced. We check whether your door's profile and finish are still available, and tell you if a mismatch might show.

Panel Trouble to Watch For

  • Middle of a wide section sags

Lay a straightedge across the panel. If the center drops below the ends, it has lost stiffness and will keep worsening without reinforcement.

  • Creasing near the hinges

A crease around the hinge plate shows the panel is failing where it is anchored. The hinge may pull through the skin next.

  • Rust or cracking at the bottom

The bottom panel meets water, dirt and chemicals first. Rust that has opened up the steel or cracked skin means it is time to talk about replacing it.

How Panel Repair Proceeds

  1. 1

    Assess the extent

We look at the extent of the damage, whether the section is still true, and whether its hinges and the neighbouring sections are affected.

  2. 2

    Repair, brace or replace

Minor dents are corrected, wide sections get strut reinforcement, and badly damaged panels are replaced with the closest match available.

  3. 3

    Re-hang and test

The new or repaired section is hung, hinges and rollers are set, and a few full open-and-close runs prove it seals and travels evenly.

Panel Questions

Can one panel be replaced on its own?
Often, if the door's model and finish are still available. We tell you honestly if the replacement may not match, or if the rest of the door is worn enough that replacing it makes more sense.
Is a dent worth repairing?
A shallow dent on a stiff panel is mostly cosmetic. A crease through the profile, or one close to a hinge, is structural and tends to grow with every cycle, so that kind of damage is worth addressing soon.
What do struts do on a wide door?
A strut is a stiffening bar fixed across a section. On a wide opening it keeps the panel from flexing under its own weight and stops the hinges from slowly working their way out of the skin.

Panel Dented, Cracked or Sagging?

Door width and a description of the damage let us say whether the section wants a repair, strut reinforcement or replacement.
