Garage Door Cable Repair in Arcadia, Done Square

Cables carry the full weight of the door from the springs. We replace worn or snapped ones, check the drums and set both sides to share the load evenly.

Two Thin Cables Hold the Whole Door

Every lift cable starts at a bracket low on the edge of the door and rises to a drum on the spring shaft. The spring turns the drum, the drum winds the cable in, and the cable raises the door. The whole weight of the door passes through that braided steel, and on tall or high-lift doors the cables are longer and wear more.

In busy buildings cables often fail near the bottom bracket, where a lift truck or pallet can catch them, or where dirt and moisture collect. We replace them as a pair, inspect the drums for grooves worn smooth, and balance the tension side to side.

Warning Signs on the Cables

  • Broken strands near the bracket

Run a gloved finger well clear of the door and look at the bottom end. Splayed or snapped wires mean the cable is near the end of its life.

  • Slack cable on one side

A cable hanging loose or off its drum means the door has been lifted unevenly, and the other side is carrying more than its share.

  • Door jammed crooked

If one side is lower than the other and the door will not close squarely, a cable has stretched, slipped or parted. Stop using it.

How We Replace a Cable

  1. 1

    Lock the door down

The door is clamped in place and the spring tension is controlled before anything is loosened, because a loose cable can release a heavy load suddenly.

  2. 2

    Fit the matching pair

New cables are cut to the door's height and attached to the brackets and drums, with the drum grooves and bottom hardware inspected.

  3. 3

    Balance and cycle

Tension is set evenly on both sides, the door is checked for twist, and it is run through several full cycles before we leave.

Cable Questions

Does one frayed cable mean both need replacing?
Usually it does. Both cables hold the same load and wear at the same pace, which means the second one is not far behind the first. A new pair is also easier to tension evenly, and that keeps the door from racking sideways in the track.
Why do cables fray at the bottom?
That corner collects grit, moisture and knocks from carts and pallets. The braided steel also flexes there on every cycle, so the outer strands break first, long before the middle of the cable looks worn to the eye.
Can I lift the door by hand after a cable breaks?
Please do not try. A door held up by one cable may be hanging on very little, and it can twist or drop without warning. Stay away from the door, keep bystanders back and tell us what you see when you phone.

One Side Sitting Lower Than the Other?

Stop cycling the door and keep the opening clear. Its height and a description of the cable are enough for a first assessment.
